A new nationwide survey shows that 44% of Canadian households have lost work with an additional 18% anticipating future work loss. Young Canadians aged 18 to 24 years old were affected the most, as were the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. One third of those who experienced lost work stated they would not be able to accommodate excess expenses in the near future and would have to miss rent or mortgage payments. Last week alone, there were 500,000 new EI claims, but the process remains confusing and challenging for most Canadians. Although it is anticipated that there will be continued job loss as businesses close and large projects are halted, the majority of those surveyed are optimistic that they will return to their normal work after the pandemic.
