Countries and cities across Asia once thought to have COVID-19 under control are having to re-implement strict measures with a rising number of imported cases. This is likely related to citizens returning to their home country after travelling to Europe and the United States earlier in March. Some countries such as such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan are swiftly closing their borders to almost all foreign travellers, while other countries such as South Korea mandate all foreign travellers to quarantine in government facilities for two weeks. These measures are also aided by technology such as tracking bracelets and smartphone apps which monitor the movement of individuals in quarantine at home to ensure compliance. Moreover, the punishment for violating these restrictions can also be significant, from fines of thousands of dollars to invalidation of their passport to even imprisonment for a few months.
