Quebec has emerged as a clear hotspot for COVID-19 within Canada, with over half of the country’s cases yet only 22% of the total population. As a consequence, the province as of March 30th has 235 COVID-19 hospitalizations including 78 patients in the ICU. Many public health experts believe this surge in cases relates to the province’s early March Break beginning March 1st. This allowed students and their families to travel to Europe and popular U.S. destinations such as New York and Florida without the worries of a global pandemic which was later announced on March 11th. By the time schools closed on March 13th and non-essential travel was discouraged, students had already returned to classes for four days. Now, the province is quickly increasing its testing capabilities to 8000 tests per day, compared to Ontario’s daily rate of 3000 samples.
