On Thursday, the William Osler Health System announced the death of a healthcare worker at Brampton Civic Hospital from complications linked to COVID-19. This is the first time an Ontario hospital has confirmed the death of one of its workers during the pandemic. Meanwhile, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams, updated testing guidelines. A new memo stated that healthcare workers and first responders should be tested for COVID-19 as soon as they develop any symptoms, even atypical ones. Additionally, it was stated that anyone newly admitted to a long-term care home should be tested, even asymptomatic residents, if they have had contact with a confirmed case. However, when asked whether there were plans to conduct wider testing of the general public, Dr. Williams said that he had not received any recommendations from the province’s epidemiologist to do so.
