On Saturday, the United States surpassed Italy for the most confirmed COVID-19 deaths in the world, with 20,229 fatalities. To date, there have been 19,468 confirmed deaths in Italy. Deaths per capita remain lower in the U.S. than in Italy, but experts warn that geography and population density have cushioned the United States so far. American leaders continue to debate how soon the country should be reopened, as they are faced with both public health and economic crises.
