Trump’s move to cut WHO funding prompts world condemnation

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on April 14 that the U.S. is halting funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) while a review is conducted of the role of WHO “in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.” President Trump has criticized the WHO in particular for being too lenient on China, where the novel coronavirus emerged in late 2019. The U.S. is the largest single donor to the WHO; they annually contribute between $400 million and $500 million USD. There has since been pushback from the international community, with other countries showing support for the WHO and the work it has been doing to address this pandemic. Trump’s decision to halt funding has also been criticized in the U.S. as well.
