In a media announcement on April 25, 2020, the province amends an emergency order issued on March 30th which determined community gardens as a recreational amenity. The province has since re-opened community gardens and declared them an essential source of fresh food, particularly for individuals facing food insecurity in light of the pandemic. Gardens have to follow the recommendations and instructions issued by local medical officers of health such as physical distancing and regularly disinfecting commonly used equipment and surfaces. This change comes in light of an open letter written by Sustain Ontario which garnered more than 7,200 signatures from Canadians, in addition to thousands of emails/letters written to provincial members of parliament. The re-opening of community gardens will require collaboration from community garden coordinators and gardeners to ensure public health guidelines are followed.
