According to Statistics Canada, almost two million jobs were lost in April, bringing unemployment rates to 13%. Job losses were higher than average in lower paying and less secure jobs such as temporary jobs. Smaller companies were hit harder and saw declines in employment of 30.8%. Hard-hit sectors at the outset of the COVID-19 crisis such as retail, hotels, restaurants and bars continue to face losses in April. In addition to job losses, many who were still working saw declines in the number of hours worked.
