Coronavirus spread accelerates again in Germany

The Robert Koch Institute for Disease Control said new coronavirus infections are accelerating again in Germany days after it loosened social restrictions. Germany’s reproduction rate—the number of people each sick person infects—has risen to 1.1, meaning the number of cases is growing. As of Sunday, the total case count had increased by a daily 667 to 169,218, while the death toll had risen to over 7,000. The increase comes days after Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the opening of more stores and a gradual return to school, with mounting pressure from Germany’s states to revive the economy. The Robert Koch Institute cautioned that the increase in the reproduction rate “necessitates a close monitoring of the situation”, as some fear exponential growth of cases will return.
