According to sources with knowledge of talks between Canada and the U.S, the Canada-U.S. border is expected to stay closed to non-essential travel until June 21 in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The restriction on non-essential travel across the border was first implemented on March 21, then extended until May 21, and is now expected to be extended again. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that the Canadian government is going to be very careful about reopening any international travel before they feel it is the time, and that when the border does open, the government is looking into stronger measures to ensure follow up with individuals who come into Canada. The current closure of the border does not affect essential travel (e.g. the flow of goods, or travel to get to work) and flights between Canada and the U.S. continue. NDP MP Brian Masse, representative of the Windsor West riding, voiced concerns about the number of deaths in Detroit due to COVID-19, and that Sarnia and Windsor, both border communities, have higher per-capita infection rates than the rest of Ontario.
