Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced a provincial investigation into five long-term care homes with COVID-19 outbreaks in the Toronto area following a report issued by the Canadian Armed Forces. Members of the military have been present at the facilities since April 28, and will continue to provide assistance for another month. The military reported dangerous actions that may have contributed to outbreaks including presence of insects in the homes, aggressive behaviour by staff towards residents, improper use of personal protective equipment and medical equipment, and housing of COVID-19 positive residents with those who had not tested positive. The proposed investigation will include the province’s chief coroner and Premier Ford believes there is potential for criminal charges.
