Alberta minister says it’s a ‘great time’ to build a pipeline because COVID-19 restrictions limit protests against them

Alberta’s energy minister, Sonya Savage, made the following comment last week on a podcast hosted by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors: “Now is a great time to be building a pipeline because you can’t have protests of more than 15 people. Let’s get it built.” The opposition NDP energy critic, Irfan Sabir, has said that Ms. Savage’s comments do not come as a surprise, as the United Conservative Party already used the pandemic in order to suspend environmental monitoring. While Alberta Premier Jason Kenney defended the general right to protest recently, the government is less tolerant of civil disobedience, introducing a legislation back in February imposing fines and possible jail time for protesters that damage or interfere with energy infrastructure operations.
