Russia to start coronavirus vaccine clinical trials in two weeks, health minister says

Russia, which has the world’s third-largest caseload of COVID-19, plans to start clinical trials for a coronavirus vaccine within the next two weeks. Volunteers have already been selected for the upcoming clinical trial. Researchers in Russia are currently working on 50 different vaccine projects. On Saturday, Russia also approved its first anti-COVID-19 drug, Avifavir, which is based on the existing favipiravir drug. Avifavir was shown to be successful in disrupting COVID-19’s ability to reproduce in expedited clinical trials. Across the world, 10 vaccines are currently being tested in human trials, but experts predict a vaccine will not be ready for public use for 12-18 months.
