Italy opens borders ahead of neighbors, still eyed warily

Italy is the first country in Europe to fully open its international borders, and it has also removed the 2-week quarantine period for visitors. Many other countries in Europe are set to open on June 15, with some opening even later. The rules around travel in Europe are different depending on the country: Germany is due to lift a travel warning for European countries on June 15, but it may still advise against travel in certain cases, while Austria is ending border checks with its neighbouring countries with the exception of Italy due to concerns around COVID-19. Meanwhile, beginning next week, Britain is planning on imposing a mandatory 2-week quarantine for people entering the country. Countries such as Portugal and Britain are also discussing forming “air bridges”, where certain countries/regions would be exempted from quarantine rules.
