Ontario considering Stage 2 of reopening despite steady stream of new COVID-19 cases

Premier Doug Ford signalled that Ontario’s Stage 2 of reopening is being considered by senior officials and that announcements may be made as early as next week. Stage 2 will ease restrictions and allow for the reopening of more office-based businesses and will increase the maximum size of social gatherings. Ontario’s top criteria for easing restrictions is a consistent decline, over a two to four week period, in the daily number of new cases. Since May 14, when Ontario announced its first stage of reopening, this benchmark has not yet been consistently reached. Ford has offered some hope for a quick reopening and may consider using a regional approach to phasing out restrictions.
