The healthcare system in Pakistan is being stretched nearly to capacity as lockdown restrictions lift and skepticism about healthcare workers are on the rise. Theories including one that doctors are falsely declaring that patients have COVID-19 in order to be paid by the World Health Organization have been swirling and causing people to lash out at healthcare workers. A lack of personal protective equipment continues to pose a concern for frontline workers, and many express their frustrations at the government’s decision to lift lockdown restrictions. Despite the number of critical cases continuing to rise, the Prime Minister states that the economic cost of lockdown on a country where a quarter of the population lives below the poverty line would be too great to justify such restrictions.
